Telecom Review recently visited with the Executive Director of Sabey Data Centers, John Sabey, to provide a company overview for our readers. As the top ICT publication for the wireless and wired communications industry, our readers are among the most knowledgeable in this business environment.
From the board, John supports activity for Sabey Data Centers’ three million square feet of mission critical space held in the current portfolio, as well as new development, acquisition, and the creation of new service offerings. He also serves as Chief Executive Officer for Sabey Corporation, overseeing the commercial real estate portfolio comprising commercial and medical technology space.
In their data center facilities across the country, Sabey offers a unique combination of renewable energy, power efficiency, and customer-focused operations. Their design innovations continue the company’s history of leadership in responsible, sustainable, energy-efficient design, construction, and operations.
Sabey recently announced two new data centers in Austin, Texas. The new data center campus is designed to provide up to 72-megawatts (MW) of power capacity with reliability, security, connectivity, and flexibility in mind.
Scalable to accommodate hyperscale deployments, the two-building, 40-acre data center campus will support enterprise requirements of all sizes and scales. In addition, Sabey’s Austin-area data center will feature the company’s latest innovations that maximize available data center space while shrinking its construction footprint. Site preparation has commenced, and Sabey will break ground on the new data center campus in July of 2022 with a target Ready for Service Date of Q2 2023.

With its expansion into the Central U.S. market, Sabey adds to its established and growing data center portfolio, including data center campuses in Seattle, WA, Quincy, WA, East Wenatchee, WA, Ashburn, VA, and New York City, NY.

Sabey’s Commitment to Sustainability
Sabey Data Centers has pioneered sustainability within the data center industry. Its commitment extends beyond energy initiatives to adopt the best and highest use of green practices across the board. These efforts include a hyper-focus on whole-building energy efficiency, as recognized by the ENERGY STAR program and the Better Buildings Challenge; construction technologies that reduce carbon emissions in the production of concrete for new buildings; the installation of charging stations for zero-emission motor vehicles; and a commitment to engaging vendors who share the same climate values.
In 2019, Amazon and Global Optimism co-founded The Climate Pledge, a commitment to reach the Paris Agreement 10 years early and be net-zero carbon by 2040. Sabey was among the first 150 of over 300 companies to sign The Climate Pledge, sending an important signal that there will be rapid growth in demand for products and services that help reduce carbon emissions.
Today’s thriving technology sector provides boundless business and social benefits, yet data centers are energy-intensive, representing two percent of all U.S. electricity use. Throughout their 25-year history, Sabey has always given thought to the sources of electricity that powers its data centers.
Two of their five campuses nationwide already use 100 percent renewable energy. In the future, they envision their portfolio of data centers to be ‘net positive,’ producing more electricity—all from renewable sources—than they use. Their support of The Climate Pledge extends far beyond sustainable energy. It underscores their commitment to a sustainability program that is net-zero carbon across the Scope 1 and 2 emissions produced by their planning and operations. Utilizing renewable energy is just part of the sustainability equation; how efficiently that energy is used makes a big difference.
Sabey’s Industry-Leading Energy Efficiency
A data center’s energy efficiency is measured by its overall Power Utilization Effectiveness (PUE). If 100% of the electricity to a facility went toward powering the IT infrastructure, the result would be a perfect PUE of 1.0. However, that ratio climbs as other electrical consumption is factored in, such as lighting and cooling.
Hot-aisle containment is one of the most energy-efficient models that a data center deployment can utilize to cool its equipment. Sabey Data Centers pairs this model with intelligent cooling systems, such as indirect evaporative cooling and environmental economizers, to further reduce overall energy consumption.
The cost of power is one of the most critical variables when measuring the total cost of ownership (TCO) for a data center, comprising at least 20% of total costs in an average data center configuration. As such, Sabey’s efforts toward energy efficiency don’t just promote stewardship of the environment, but their customers’ bottom lines as well.

Sabey Data Centers: A Positive History
Sabey Data Centers is a joint venture between Sabey Corporation, a privately-held, family-owned company, and National Real Estate Advisors. It was established in 1996 and remains private today. John told us that they will continue to grow and may add another site by the end of this year, or next year. “We are among the most established data center companies in the US and have the management and leadership continuity to sustain our growth into the future”, John added.
