According to a joint statement by the US Department of State and the Kingdom of Sweden Ministry for Foreign Affairs, both countries will identify synergies and explore possibilities to create a joint ecosystem for research and development in 6G technology and applications, as well as support pathways to cultivate wireless communications for economic, environmental, and societal impact.

This is aligned with the joint commitment expressed by President Biden and Prime Minister Kristersson in July 2023 to deepen joint research in 6G advanced telecommunications.

Wireless communications play a crucial role in our societies and these networks have become a core part of a country’s critical infrastructure. Hence, there is a need for continuous advancement.

Based on the plurilateral Joint Statement Endorsing Principles for 6G: Secure, Open and Resilient by Design and the US-EU Trade and Technology Council 6G Vision, there is an important value to international cooperation, including private sector partners, in promoting open and interoperable architectures, such as open radio access networks, and resilient, secure, safe, trustworthy, inclusive, and sustainable 6G.

US and Sweden aim to build a collaborative ecosystem for 6G research and development by leveraging new spectrum allocations, harmonizing frequency bands globally, and fostering cooperation based on shared principles like transparency and innovation.

Both countries will focus on addressing cross-cutting ICT issues such as diversity and accessibility, and promoting sustainable, secure, and competitive 6G technologies. The approach includes supporting the creation of open, consensus-based international standards, exploring long-term research collaborations, and encouraging advancements in areas like AI, cybersecurity, and edge computing.

Additionally, workforce development and increased diversity to bolster security, resilience, and innovation in the telecommunications sector are emphasized.

Apart from this, US and Sweden will be facilitating the exchange of ideas, supporting large-scale 6G testbeds, and developing technologies to bridge digital divides, seeking to ensure 6G accessibility in emerging markets and exploring additional collaborative.

“We intend to engage regularly and focus on cooperation in next generation communications, including 6G and beyond, as outlined in this vision for the mutual benefit of the United States of America, the Kingdom of Sweden, and the wider global community,” concluded the joint statement.

During MWC 2024, Sweden and United States also signed a joint statement with the governments of Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the United Kingdom, on principles for the development of future 6G policies.
